Tangier City Port wins the AIVP Antoine Rufenacht Prize:An international recognition for the City of Tangier.

Tangier City Port won the AIVP Antoine Rufenacht Prize at the World Conference of the International Association of Cities and Ports (AIVP) held in Lisbon from 27 to 29 November 2024. This prize, awarded for the first time, rewards the best city-port interface development project, combining innovation, sustainability, and integration.

The AIVP Antoine Rufenacht Prize is the only international award dedicated to maritime and river port cities that have carried out an outstanding development project in line with the sustainable development objectives of the AIVP Agenda 2030, contributing to the improvement of the City-Port relationship.

This first edition saw the participation of 23 international projects from various renowned ports. After an initial rigorous evaluation phase carried out by a jury of multidisciplinary international experts, six finalists were selected: Port of Los Angeles (United States), Port of Seattle (United States), HAROPA PORT Paris (France), Port of Oslo (Norway), Corporación Antiguo Puerto Madero (Argentina) and Port of Tangier-City (Morocco).

At the end of the final deliberations, and following the various presentations by these six finalists to the Grand Jury made up of 6 personalities representing the five continents, the Port of Tangier-City Conversion Project stood out and was named winner of the AIVP Antoine Rufenacht Prize, rewarding a vision, a track record and an exemplary model for the sustainable and integrated transformation of city-port interfaces.

Mr Mohamed Ouanaya, Chairman of Tangier City Port, said:

‘Receiving the AIVP Antoine Rufenacht Prize is an immense source of pride for the Port of Tangier-City, for the city of Tangier, and for Morocco as a whole. This prize not only rewards a project but also a vision supported by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aimed at positioning Tangier as a strategic crossroads between Africa and Europe and also as a flagship destination for cruise tourism and yachting in the Mediterranean.

The AIVP Antoine Rufenacht Prize crowns more than a decade of continuous work, innovation and collaboration, thanks to the contribution of all the players and stakeholders in the City of Tangier.

Through this project, we wanted to breathe new life into a port area steeped in history, by transforming it into a model of sustainable and inclusive development.

In this way, Tangier has been able to reinvent itself while remaining true to its identity.’

Today, the Port of Tangier City has become a vector of vitality and influence for the city of Tangier, and a benchmark for the development of the city-port interface.

The redevelopment of the Port of Tangier symbolizes an urban and economic renaissance, where history meets modernity to create a dynamic and sustainable space, redefining the relationship between the city and the port.
