Temporary Exhibition by Bank Al-Maghrib: “Tangier Confluences: Numismatic and Archaeological Perspectives
The Bank Al-Maghrib Museum, in partnership with the Tangier City Port Redevelopment Company (SAPT), is organizing a temporary exhibition entitled “Tangier Confluences: Numismatic and Archaeological Perspectives.” The exhibition will be held at Borj En-Naam in Tangier from June 25, 2026, to May 31, 2027. Having previously dedicated exhibitions to major historic Moroccan cities such as Sala, Aghmat, and Sijilmassa, the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum continues its scientific and cultural program by highlighting Tangier, an emblematic city whose strategic location has fostered, since Antiquity, encounters between peoples, civilizations, and commercial exchanges linking Africa, Europe, and the Mediterranean world.
Designed through a multidisciplinary approach, the exhibition brings together a rich collection of coins, archaeological artifacts, historical documents, and works of art. These collections trace more than two millennia of history and shed light on the diverse influences that have shaped the city, from the myths surrounding its foundation to the profound transformations accompanying its development in the modern era.
The exhibition route unfolds through three chronological sections dedicated to Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Alaouite Dynasty. Coinage occupies a central place as a historical source, revealing the economic, political, and cultural dynamics that have contributed to the development of Tangier throughout the centuries. Through this exhibition, the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum reaffirms its commitment to research, conservation, and the promotion of Morocco’s national heritage. This initiative also reflects Bank Al-Maghrib’s desire to develop scientific projects based on interdisciplinary dialogue and the networking of heritage collections, offering the public new perspectives on the history of Moroccan cities.
